Challenge
A world-leading aquaculture company was experiencing declining performance from their aging Heila HLRM170-4S marine crane, which was critical to their vessel’s lifting operations. A full crane replacement would have led to significant operational downtime, high capital expenditure and disruption to aquaculture activities.
To maintain uninterrupted lifting operations and avoid costly delays, the client needed a solution that would extend the crane’s lifespan bypassing the need for a replacement and minimising operational delays.
Solution
To minimise downtime, our ‘Rent & Refurb’ service provided a rental crane with identical mounting points, allowing the client’s unit to be swapped out within a day, ensuring uninterrupted operations.
Our technicians dismantled and inspected the original crane and produced a detailed report outlining the necessary refurbishments. Key components were stripped, degreased, and shot-blasted and tested using Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) to ensure structural integrity. Hydraulic and electrical systems were overhauled, and external electrical components and the local control bank were relocated to a stainless-steel enclosure for enhanced protection.
After repainting to NORSOK standards, the crane was reassembled with new parts and successfully passed Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) witnessed by the client. Post-installation, it cleared all functional and load tests, returning to full service with improved reliability and extended lifespan.
